3. Windscale (England)

The Windscale nuclear facility in Cumberland, England, was built after the second world war for the atomic bomb project. The nuclear accident at Windscale occurred on October 10, 1957, when a fire broke out in the first section of the plant. The fire could not be extinguished for three days, and nuclear fallout spread across Europe. After the incident, it was said that there was no need to evacuate the settlements close to the site. However, all agricultural crops grown in a 500-kilometer radius around the plant were destroyed. A total of 240 people developed cancer after this accident, which is scaled as level 5 on the INES scale.
