‘Netflix with Ads’ is Available: So Which Countries Are Available and How Much Does It Cost?
Netflix‘s premium service with ads started to be available in some countries as of November 1.
Netflix, one of the world’s largest TV series and movie streaming platforms, gave the green light to the advertised subscription system earlier this year. Although some small information about this package was revealed later, Netflix kept silent about when and in which countries these packages would be available.
The premium subscription service with ads, which Netflix officially introduced in recent weeks, has been available in some countries as of yesterday. So, how much will the new subscription option cost?
Netflix’s subscription package with ads will be available for $6.99 per month in the US. The price will be 4.99 euros in Germany, 5.49 euros in Italy, and 5.99 euros in France.
Users who use the package with ads will see about 4-5 minutes in the 1 hour of content they watch. Unlike television, which shows 10-20 minutes of ads per 1 hour, Netflix’s plan seems a bit more merciful. It was also announced that the ads would last between 15 and 30 seconds and could not be skipped.
Does this mean I have to watch ads?
If you’re already a subscriber you won’t have to switch to the new tier, but you can if you want to pay less and want to stomach some ads. The other tiers will remain the same price (for now).
If you want to make the switch and are currently paying for your Netflix subscription through a third party, it’s worth checking with your provider to see if Ad Basic will be available to you, as the plan won’t be available to everyone.
What kind of ads can I expect to see and when?
Ads will be between 15 and 30 seconds long and will play before and during TV shows and movies. You won’t be able to skip them, but there will be frequency limits to ensure that viewers don’t see the same ads too often.
Political ads, weapons, tobacco and “get rich quick schemes” will not be allowed on Netflix. Brands will also be able to stop their ads from appearing on content with sex, nudity or graphic violence.
Why are they doing this?
Netflix believes they can attract new users with a cheaper tier. The streaming company suffered its first quarterly drop in subscribers in more than a decade in April; Netflix executives announced plans to introduce ads soon after. In July, Netflix reported its second quarterly loss, losing nearly 1 million subscribers. The company’s market capitalization has fallen 65% in the past year.
Netflix believes that the losses will be offset by new advertising revenue from existing subscribers switching to the more expensive Basic With Ads plans.
