What is MagSafe, and what are iPhone 12 compatible MagSafe accessories?
Apple announced a new feature called MagSafe by introducing the iPhone 12 series. As Apple defines it, MagSafe will open the door to a whole new ecosystem of accessories. So, what is MagSafe? This article tells you what you want to know about the latest technology.
What is MagSafe?
MagSafe has two different meanings. Those who have used a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air laptop many years ago are familiar with this term.
What is MagSafe for Mac?
In 2006, Apple introduced a unique technology called MagSafe for the MacBook Pro. The idea for its development was based on this: If a person’s foot got caught in the power cord charging the MacBook, the MagSafe connector would detach from the connector connected to the computer, preventing the computer from falling to the floor and causing damage. This power connection for MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and MacBook Pros essentially utilized magnetic force.
However, since 2016, when Apple started offering power supply on its laptops via USB-C connections, the term MagSafe has gradually lost its meaning on Apple’s laptops.
What is MagSafe for iPhone?
The latest version of MagSafe is an improved connection and charging system for the iPhone 12, 13, and 14 series models. Apple has taken the iPhone’s wireless charging coil and added new components, resulting in a new, improved wireless charging method that still supports Qi wireless charging. It also allows the use of this technology with different types of accessories.
For iPhone, MagSafe adds a magnetometer and a single-coil NFC reader. The magnets ensure that the iPhone is correctly aligned with the wireless charger. Previously, if the phone was not perfectly aligned when using a standard Qi wireless charger, charging could be slower than expected. With MagSafe charging, however, the alignment is perfect, resulting in the promised 15W of power delivery.
According to Apple, the iPhone 12 mini delivers 12W of power, while other iPhone 12 series models can charge with 15W of power output.
If you use Qi charging with your iPhone 12, 13, or 14, Apple says you’ll still be limited to 7.5W. This is the same charging speed as on older generation iPhones, such as the iPhone 11. On the other hand, you can use Apple’s MagSafe Duo and MagSafe chargers to charge other smartphones and accessories that support Qi wireless charging. However, the charging time for these devices may be longer than expected.

What is MagSafe for accessories?
There are two types of MagSafe accessories: MagSafe chargers and MagSafe compatible cases, wallet cases, wallet covers, mounts, etc.
What is MagSafe
Apple has already announced that it will integrate MagSafe into its charging accessories. MagSafe support is also included in the silicone, transparent, and leather cases for iPhone 12, 13, and 14. This means that MagSafe charging accessories can be appropriately used even when your device is in a case. Third-party accessory manufacturers can also support MagSafe technology in their products. This will open the door to brand-new accessories.
MagSafe compatible accessories
Since MagSafe is a technology developed by Apple, it is expected that the first accessories come from Apple.
MagSafe charging accessories
Apple introduced products such as MagSafe Wireless Charger for iPhone and MagSafe Duo Wireless Charger for iPhone and Apple Watch.
The MagSafe Duo charger is especially ideal for Apple Watch owners. It allows you to charge your iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously, saving time and space. Instead of carrying separate power adapters and cables for the smartwatch and phone, a single power adapter and cable will suffice. The MagSafe Duo Charger comes with a Lightning-USB-C cable. If you bought a 20W power adapter for your iPhone 12, 13, or 14 series phone, you could use it.
MagSafe cases, wallet cases, and pockets
Apple also introduced MagSafe-supported versions of the silicone and transparent cases. The cases fit more easily on phones thanks to magnetic force. iPhone recognizes the issue and displays an animation on the screen to show it’s on. A leather case with MagSafe support is also on sale.
When the iPhone is placed in the particular pocket case, the pocket recognizes this and shows the time through its little eye. The color of the watch also matches the color of the case.
Finally, Apple has also released a leather wallet case that easily attaches to the back of the iPhone 12, 13, or 14 or a MagSafe-compatible case. In short, MagSafe will become a standard in future products for the iPhone line.
