What is NASA’s Artemis Program?

NASA’s Artemis program is a lunar mission that will explore the Moon and Mars. This program aims to send the first woman and first person of color to the Moon by 2024. Nasa chose the Ancient Greek goddess Artemis, the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo, god of the sun, as the namesake for the expedition to symbolize the program’s feminist goals. How Is the Artemis Program Different From the Apollo Missions?

The Apollo missions were a series of space flights in which NASA sent manned spacecraft to the Moon. The first manned mission was Apollo 8 in 1968, and the last was Apollo 17 in 1972. The Apollo 17 men landed in the Taurus-Littrow valley near the Apollo 15 landing site. The Moon is the Earth’s only natural satellite, orbiting us about once every 28 days. It is the sixth largest natural satellite in the solar system and is relatively close, being 28 times farther away from Earth than the sun. The Moon’s gravity pulls on our oceans, stabilizing them as well as keeping Earth’s crust tectonically stable. It is also thought to account for the tides. The Moon’s surface is a rocky debris field composed of ancient volcanic and impacts basaltic plains with some lighter materials in the form of anorthosite (a rock consisting of calcium-bearing plagioclase crystals) and some dark volcanic ash deposited during the cinder cones that make up most of the Moon’s highland areas. The enormous impact crater, Mare Imbrium, is located in one corner.

The Artemis missions are a series of lunar exploration missions by NASA, with the goal of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon by 2025, followed by a human mission to Mars in the 2030s.
